My View:
I will be honest here, I don't get the point of this book. Monkey of the Month is a cute enough story, but it just isn't for me... that being said My 3 year old enjoyed it, so I guess that is more important. When I read the title of this book (Monkey of the Month), I would have expected it to teach the names of the months or at least the seasons, or something. It, however, is a simple narrative about a boy who gets a very odd present for his birthday. Each month he receives a new pet. They aren't all monkeys; some are apes (and yes there IS a difference as my Zoologist friend likes to tell me).
The illustrations are vibrant and there are many areas that are picture only, leaving many talking points for you with your child. It reminds me of another of my 3 year old's favorites Goodnight Gorilla in the way it mixed dialogue and picture-book qualities.

ReplyDeleteI like this book! I think it is a fun book to read to kids, and I can see why your son liked it. The colors on the front of the book look spectacular, and the name of the book Monkey of the Month is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had the chance to read this book and my kids I work with love books. You would be surprise what we find as dull books, children tend to love. Their imaginations really runs :)
ReplyDeleteVery true. My son LOVES Goodnight Gorilla and I can not stand that book, but I read it daily because he loves it so much.
