Boating time is family time as everyone often shares both the work and the fun. Even young children are eager to help and, once their curiosity is aroused, they'll look for ways to learn more about boating. All About Boats: A to Z shows the youngest crew members the purpose of the many things they see while boating. Each letter appears on a separate page. The featured word is explained by a verse and an illustration, showing how it fits for boating. "B" is for bell. Though there are many types of bells, a ship's bell is used to send signals, which can be a safety factor in fog or rain. This book is a great conversational tool on the aspects of boating as families develop their onboard teamwork. For children in grades K-2.
Zora and David Aiken have collaborated on nine books, including five for children. They live on a sailboat and meander along coastal and inland waterways gathering material for their work.
My View:
When you have kids, you can find any number of books about the Alphabet. The trick is to find one in a format to interest your kids, or to go along with something else you want to teach your children. It is in the later vein that I often find myself looking for books on subjects I might otherwise overlook. As we have discussed, I homeschool. Sadly, I am not able to homeschool my oldest at this time, but I do homeschool my preschooler. Each week we choose a theme and I like to find 2-3 books around that theme. One week is always Boats. One theme, I have had a surprisingly hard time finding age appropriate books has been boats. I find books that are too simplistic or too long. But I have added a new one to my boat lesson plan recently. All About Boats A to Z by David and Zoe Aiken.
Each page gives a definition of a nautical word that starts with the appropriate letter and has a definition that is easy to understand. Each page also has matching full color illustrations. One thing I like, but others might not, is that the letters themselves (both upper and lowercase) are hand drawn, so your child gets used to seeing their letters in different fonts.

This looks like a great educational and fun book! My grandson loves boats, so I know he would enjoy this very much!
ReplyDeleteMy son had some difficulties learning to read because he was going through speech therapy at the same time. This is exactly the kind of book that would have sparked his interest :)
ReplyDeleteThis book is awesome. It teaches about boats from A to Z! A child could really learn about boats with this book! It is so good to read to children and teach them these things when they are young. I like this book,and would love to read it to my nephew!
